I think this is the first close-up shot of the red form.

Jan/Feb 2008 also in Bellaire TX
I also had one of these Gastheracantha cancriformis living in my garden in Jan/Feb 2009.

When I first saw it it was plump like the one below. after a few months it seemed like it had 'deflated' and looked more like the one pictured above (June16,2008).

Here is an orange one that lived outside our den window from Sept 2007 to Feb 2008 in Bellaire, TX

 
Mine was
completely red, but yours and mine are the same species, just different coloration.

Very cool
I've never seen this variation before.
