Red-spotted Purple Caterpillar - Limenitis arthemis

Red-spotted Purple Caterpillar - Limenitis arthemis
Greenwood County, South Carolina, USA
June 5, 2005
Size: ~30mm length
I found this caterpillar roaming along the side of my house, a good distance from any tree. I had the feeling it was looking for a spot to pupate. I provided a stick for it to crawl onto, and left it on the stick for this photo. I placed it in a screened bug container with an elevated stick. Within 24 hours it had pupated. The container was kept in my garage, so the temperature was probably more consistent than it would have been outdoors. I'm not sure how much that affects the chrysalis stage.
