Red-spotted Purple - Limenitis arthemis

Red-spotted Purple - Limenitis arthemis
Greenwood County, South Carolina, USA
June 13, 2005
The butterfly had emerged in the morning. I removed it from its container and placed it on a daylily to photograph. I didn't get any good photos of the butterfly with its wings open; it would spread them a couple times and then keep them folded for several minutes. The butterfly appeared to leave a few drops of fluid on the flower...excess after forming the wings? It took nearly an hour before the butterfly tried to fly.

Simply Beautiful
What a great series of images. Caterpillar to butterfly in eight days. Amazing!

Thanks
Thanks for the compliment. It was fun to watch. I never seem to find caterpillars when I actively look, but I'd like to find other types of caterpillars and try it again.

Careful
You'll get hooked, like me :).

It's great by the way to have one of these particular caterpillars verifiably identified with an adult image.
