Large Cocoon

Large Cocoon
Baton Rouge - BREC Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
July 15, 2008
Size: 4.4 cm long
It flew the coop!
Alas, we did see it at all.

We cut it out to put in a cage on 7/17 and found a nice hole in one end. Not sure if it was always there, although I thought I had looked. When I review the pictures, none is conclusive about whether the hole was already there when we first found it.

At least we will know what to do the next time we find one.

Thanks to all for the help.

What was it?
That's a pretty small hole - Think you can describe what you saw? I'd love to find out what came out of that.

To be a little more clear...
We left the cocoon in place undisturbed for 2 days after we discovered it. We listened and talked about what we should do with it. We decided to cut the vine and put the cocoon in a wire cage. When we cut the vine, we could get a good look at the end the faced away and towards the ground. We found the hole.

Sorry, I was not clear
Sorry I was not clear in the last note.
We did not see anything at all.
Just found the hole.

I guess I will cut it open and see what I find.
It seems empty.
No weight.
Nothing rattles.

Parasitized?
I'm thinking that a wasp came out of that. Exit hole looks too ragged to be from the intended occupant, and if no pupal case was found inside, that is further evidence of an ichneumon or something similar....

Exactly what I guessed
- But wouldn't they leave something behind?
