Black and yellow sawfly - Allantus viennensis

Black and yellow sawfly - Allantus viennensis
Springfield, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
June 11, 2005
Size: 10mm
This sawfly, which I originally mistook for a Vespid wasp, was observed flying from rose to rose in my garden. It was captured and brought inside for better photographs. Identification based on discussion here of another Allantus viennensis I found last summer.

Great mimic.
What a great mimic of mason wasps (Vespidae: Eumeninae)!

I know!
I mis took it for a mason wasp but then I saw that it had no waist and realised that it was a sawfly! Very nice photos btw!

What is this
My daughter found this 2 1/2 inch long version of the sawfly...the markings are very similar...and i have no idea what it really is....it is a very beefy wasp...HELP!

Do you have a photo of it? It might be the same species or a variation. I'm not sure as I don't know that much about sawflies to tell you.

But I think if you had a picture that would help.
