Tibicen auletes

This is the largest cicada species in the eastern USA!
It is abundant in areas where oak trees are common - in fact there may be an association or preferenc for oaks.

It is most common from late July through mid-September and very common in Alabama!

The call of the males starts as a deep, slow winding up Dirrrrrrr...Dirrrrrrrr..Dirrr..Dirrr..Dirrr..Dirrr and progressively gets a little faster and then winds down before stopping.
