Tibicen auletes

This is the largest cicada species in the eastern USA!
It is abundant in areas where oak trees are common - in fact there may be an association or preferenc for oaks.

It is most common from late July through mid-September and very common in Alabama!

The call of the males starts as a deep, slow winding up Dirrrrrrr...Dirrrrrrrr..Dirrr..Dirrr..Dirrr..Dirrr...Dirr..Dirr..Dirrr..Dirrrr and progressively gets a little faster before winding down.

I saw this guy on my side walk
I saw this guy on my side walk so I wanted to take pictures but I was not ready, my husband and I had to run an errand so I trapped it in to a can and when we got back I lifted the can and 2 specimen's where there one was an empty hull and one new very green looking thing with wings very fragile. It is pretty cool Very different than before light green . Is this really a cicada or what ever makes all that noise at night in the south!!

Yes.
Yes, it is a cicada:-) Genus is Tibicen.
