Mantis - Mantis religiosa

Mantis - Mantis religiosa
Skyline Ridge OSP, Santa Cruz Mountains, San Mateo/Santa Clara County, California, USA
July 20, 2008
Size: 60-70mm
This mantid did not appear to have any wings yet. It was making its way over some dry grass at the edge of the trail. Is there any way to tell if this is California (or at least a North American species)?

Mantis religiosa.
This is a late-instar nymph of the European mantis. the black "underarms" on the front legs are diagnostic. This species, introduced to North America, is now widespread and locally common, thanks in part to nurseries selling the ootheca.
