Tibicen dorsata - Tibicen dorsatus

Tibicen dorsata - Tibicen dorsatus
Anderson Prairie south of Pana, Illinois, USA
August 31, 2004

I caught one of these
One of these scared me to DEATH when trying to catch it. I've never heard a cicada make a distressed sound like that.

A REEEEEREEREEREEEREEEREEEUREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE at a thousand mph, or what have you. I've got it in my collection now, heheh. Mine was in Mesquite, TX

Tibicen dorsata
This photo was taken by William Zierath in Illinois. It was attached to an e-mail message from someone else, which is why I lost track of it.

A similar critter.
Hi. I found what looks to be the same species in some hill-prairies in western Iowa (e.g., Sioux Falls Prairie). Are you certain of this species identification?

Thanks,
Jeff

Tibicen dorsata
The head narrower than the thorax is distinctive for this species of Tibicen.
