Size: ~12-15mm
Sheltering from rain on a sweet potato vine. I think this keys out to be a Dolichovespula arenaria worker - can anyone confirm/deny?

D. arenaria worker is absolutely right! Brilliant photos too! = )
This photo clearly shows the "oculo-maler" space in between the eyes and the jaws which distinguishes Dolichovespula from Vespula
