Horse Fly - Tabanus fulvulus

Horse Fly - Tabanus fulvulus
Greenwood County, South Carolina, USA
June 15, 2005
Size: 15mm, head-abdomen
I accidentally stepped on this fly on my sidewalk and it bit me. The fly appeared OK but walked slowly afterward. Dorsal view.

Tabanine or Chrysopine?
Definitely the right family, but which subfamily to choose? The eye markings are not really spots, but not straight lines either. The wings are not patterned, but the abdomen is. Hmmmmmm.
(By the way, that is just my guessing process verbalized).
I will go with Tabaninae. Beyond that, I cannot say.
In English: Horsefly
