Silkmoth caterpillar? - Sphecodina abbottii

Silkmoth caterpillar? - Sphecodina abbottii
Georgetown, Floyd County, Indiana, USA
July 23, 2008
Size: about 2 1/4 inches
This caterpillar was on honeysuckle vines that are intertwined with blackberries. It looks a lot like a silkmoth caterpillar except the one in the book has a horn near its head.

Moved
Moved from Sphinx Moths.

Sphinx

I think it's Abbott's Sphinx, Sphecodina abbottii.

Firstly, that horn is actuall
Firstly, that horn is actually on the back end of this cat 8;)

Bobby is correct--according to Wagner (p. 270) this is a first instar, as the raised orange knob over A8 is replaced by a "convincing false eye" in later instars. This cat actually squeaks if you touch/poke the horn/eye spot.

Thanks!
Nina and Bobby you have both been very helpful!
