Fly - Idana marginata

Fly - Idana marginata
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA
June 14, 2005
Size: 3/8 inch
Any help on ID? Thank you!

Idana marginata.
This is a picture-winged fly in the family (Ulidiidae or Otitidae, depending on the authority consulted). One of my favorites. You can sometimes find them feeding on sap at tree wounds.

reference?
I could find no web images of this genus or species - and blank Guide pages were made for both taxa. The only ID comment that John Fox made along with his previous photos was "Ulidiidae, ID courtesy of Dr. Norrbom..."
How did you find out what this one was?

Fly
I will move this to Ulidiidae if I need to. I was basing my ID confirmation on those pictures but I did not see the statment you were pointing out. That also means that we should move John Fox's pictures. I did a Google search and did not find anything on Idana marginata.

Actually...
I was asking Eric, as he's the one who supplied the name, but thanks anyway, Matthew. If Eric can provide references and describe the field marks that distinguish this one from similar species/genera, I could add that info to the Guide for the benefit of others.

Fly
That's is. Thank you!

Good one, Matthew!
This is a new one for me - I have no idea what it is but the "slots" in the wings sure look different & distinctive. Maybe someone can help.
