Friend or Foe? - Cerastipsocus venosus

Friend or Foe? - Cerastipsocus venosus
York County, Maine, USA
July 25, 2008
Size: 1/2 cm
Anybody know what these are? Observed these critters crawling up stake after digging soil between two tomato plants. I placed the stake (from a pile aside the garden) the day prior to prop up the tomato plant. They were traveling towards the stake like ants but once on the stake they moved as a mass--like fish. Thought they were headed towards the tomato plant to dine but they stopped on the underside of the stake in the shade. Unsure if they're from the pile (mostly wood) or the upturned soil. Their bodies are very, very soft and fragile I found out when I tried to scoop some into a baggie. They scattered quickly when I bothered them.
