Orb Weaver - Micrathena gracilis - Spined Micrathena - Micrathena gracilis - female

Orb Weaver - Micrathena gracilis - Spined Micrathena - Micrathena gracilis - Female
Middlesex County, New Jersey, USA
July 25, 2008
Size: 3/8th of an inch
This is a newcomer to our area. We've lived in the same place for about 15 years now but have never seen one of these beautiful, scary looking Orb Weavers. Now we have at least three resident females who have made their homes in various locations in our side and front yards. I notice that this is the first Spined Micrathena photo from NJ, so is it possible that they are now expanding their range? I'll post more images as I have time to photograph them. Enjoy!
