Weidemeyer - Limenitis weidemeyerii

Weidemeyer - Limenitis weidemeyerii
Broadus, Montana, Powder River County, Montana, USA
August 22, 2006
I photographed this pretty butterfly in my yard last summer, and have been told it is a white admiral. However, I have noticed that it does not appear on a map as living in my area. Comments?

Very nice photos of this one in an interesting setting. Thanks for posting them. I really neet to get out west.

White Adminal or Weidemeyer's Admiral
Interesting - the upperside looks like a White Admiral and the underside looks like a Weidemeyer's Admiral which is more common in your area. Since the White Admiral range overlaps the Weidemeyer in northern Montana, perhaps this is an interbreed?

Admiral ID
Since your comment I have been researching, and now I believe it IS a Weidemeyer. Thanks! Anyone else?

Hi Lana

Admiral Discussion
Hi David, Thanks for the input. After reading the page you suggested I believe there is a good chance my speciman is a cross-breed, although having looked at some Weidemeyers, I think it more closely resembles them. Now that my photo is no longer posted on the ID Request page, will it only be available to someone looking specifically for a White Admiral, since that is what I titled it? I am very new to this and could use some guidance. Thanks!

Hi Lana
Sorry for the late reply; uncharacteristically I didn't subscribe to the page. Sorry also I don't have time to help sort-out things in regards to your specimen ... of course that could be a whole career.

The more I consider it the more spectacular your specimen looms. I would say it is a hybrid and it seems to have elements of almost all possible contributers though light on the blue. In my unprofessional opinion I agree predominantly Weidemeyer's but perhaps we should stash it on one of our hybrid pages. Its just too outlandish.

I hope David comes across this. He or one of his peers would be best to make a determination. Of course the Balabans moved it and they've been down this road more than me. If David doesn't comment in a week or so I suggest you email him (I'd do it but I'm not gonna be around).

Once we get some expert advice I advocate changing the title accordingly. That is most useful when someone rolls-over the image and the title pops-up. Its a fine point but useful.

I did some test searching and these images didn't show-up. It may take time? It'll be fine, we'll help.

Congratulations on an outstanding find & very good documentation.
