which beetle ? - Saxinis saucia
Pleasanton / Sunol, Alameda County, California, USA
July 27, 2008
Size: 1/4"
I found only one of these distinctive red shouldered beetles on some kind of thin needled dry sagebrush smelling bushes . It must be a tough beetle as all the grasses were dry and yellow and all the wildflowers had gone to seed . There were many of these sage smelling bushes lining the dry , dusty trail . I looked hard to find more specimens , but this is the only one that I had seen ... in fact on the way back , I spotted him again thinking it was another one , but nope .... same bush ! The camera had a hard time focusing on it since it was so black and shiny , but I am hoping that it's distinctive red shoulders will help in it's identification . At one point , it rolled off the leaf and fell / flew feeble to another level of the bush since it was being " bugged " . There were no flowers on this thin needled , sage smelling bush , so it must have been surviving off of the needles themselves as I did not see any other bug on the bush . Thanks for any comments , Beth

Moved
Moved from Leaf Beetles.

Maybe Saxinis, but there are several that
look like this. We'll move them to Chrysomelidae where John Watts may ID them for you.
