This chunky , but tough individual was found on a sage-smelling bush that was prevalent along the dry trail , but was the only specimen found . It was a fairly hot day of 90 degrees on a dry , dusty trail . I found a beetle with the same body type , but different coloring last year here , but cannot remember the name . Thanks for any comments . I took many photos , but my camera had a hard time focusing on it since it was either in the shade or because it's shell was sooo shiny . The sage-like plant...
I am very new to my study of plants, so this is just a hunch, but I'm wondering if the "sage-like" plant you describe in this post is possibly Artemisia californica (California Sagebrush)? This is a pretty abundant plant in the arid foothills where I live. I gather that it does smell very much like sage, but is actually in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). There are some nice images at CalPhoto. Take a look and see what you think...
