What kind of firefly? - Photuris

What kind of firefly? - Photuris
Georgetown, Floyd County, Indiana, USA
July 17, 2008
This lightning bug looks a little different that the Common Eastern firefly (photinus pyralis) I usually see. It has extra cream colored stripes down each wing cover.

Okay, thanks.
What kind of info does a person need to properly identify them?

Apologies.
Apologies for the lengthy delay in reply....Many species can only be separated based on subtle differences in their flashing patterns. You can also dissect the genitalia of males....This is the case for many insects: lots and lots of lookalike species in the same genus.
