fungus beetle - Leiodes

fungus beetle - Leiodes
Boxborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
June 16, 2005
Size: 3.5mm

Moved
Moved from Anisotoma.

Rather: Leiodes
. . . sure not Anisotoma. The spiny tibiae indicate, that this is one from the genera with subterranean (digging) habits.

The photo does not show all necessary details for a really safe genus ID - but size and curved hind tibiae almost exclude anything but Leiodes. I´ll move it there.

cheers, Boris

Boris,
Thanks for you're continuing effort at getting all the beetles identified as much as the photos allow!

Moved
to subfamily and genus.

Anisotoma sp.
Thanks Jim.

Moved to Leiodidae
Very nice image for ID, Tom.

Anisotoma sp.?
This is definitely a leiodid, a "round fungus beetle" (Leiodidae: Leiodinae)- the giveaway is the "shrunken" eigth antennal segment (fourth in from the ultimate, in this case) that characterizes many of the genera in this family.

These can be difficult to key out, and even harder to sight-id, so I'm a little hesitant to throw names around. However, because the labrum does not appear deeply emarginate (i.e., cleft), the tarsi appear to have more than 3 segments, etc. etc., I'd say this was a species of Anisotoma, a genus with 15 species in North America that is known to live on slime mold plasmodia and fruiting bodies.

A neat beetle!

cheers,

Not a leaf beetle.
Leaf beetles do not have clubbed antennae. I'd start with Nitidulidae....um, on second thought, what Zack says:-) Hahaha! The beauty of "edit your comment." Thank you, Zack for not only putting a name on this, but pointing out HOW you arrived at your decision. Brilliant:-)
