Libellula auripennis - male

Libellula auripennis - Male
Houston - drainage ditch - Hollister near Hwy 290, Harris County, Texas, USA
July 29, 2008
Size: Approximately 2"
Very difficult to differentiate from Male Libellula Needhami. Analysis of wing structure near anal loop, color of lower hind tibia, along with other standard determinants may be necessary.

Moved from Dragonflies.

Golden-winged Skimmer male - Confirmed
I believe my research has confirmed that my picture is that of a Golden-winged Skimmer male.

are these two the same individual?
Color and some other things look slightly different.

Both Golden-Winged and Needhams
Jason,

Your comment sent me into days of research. First I concluded you were correct. The two pictures are of two different individuals.
I have checked anal loop differences and conclude the dorsal view individual is in fact a Libellula needhami. The dorso-lateral picture is a male Libellula auripennis. Lower hind tibia is not clear but appear brown and the number of paranal cells proximal to anal loop is consistent with auripennis.

Can you (or John & Jane) help me move these as appropriate.

Thanks for catching this.

I'll let you go in and edit the titles and descriptions.
For future reference, there's an unlink option and then you can tag and move each one individually.

Golden-winged Skimmer male - Confirmed
Jason, I did believe at the time that they are the same individual. It did move on me but to my knowledge I did not loose track and shoot a different dragonfly. It is not impossible that these are two different dragonflies - both Needhams and Golden-Winged. I bow to the experts.
