Biggest Beetle Ever Seen in Utah - Prionus heroicus

Biggest Beetle Ever Seen in Utah - Prionus heroicus
Salt Lake City - Canyon Rim - Eastern Bench near Parleys Canyon, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA
July 29, 2008
Size: 5cm
This giant guy wandered into my driveway the other night - I've never seen any insect near this large ever in Utah. He was a solid 2-inches! He/she chirped violently when I tried to shuffle him away from the house. I never dared pick him up.

Moved
Moved from Longhorned Beetles.

Prionus
Probably P. heroicus.

Are these common in Utah?
Last night I also saw one on the concrete in front of my home (North Orem). My kids said they've seen another one that appeared to have pincers on the front (same species?). They are HUGE! They also can scurry pretty fast when spooked. I moved it from the concrete right in front of my house to the planter by the street (for my own well-being). I did not touch it, but picked it up on some newspaper. I didn't hear it make any noise. Why do they like the concrete? I grew up in the area and I have never seen a bug this big. The fact that my kids have seen a couple make me wonder about them. Thanks for any info. I'm new to the site so I'll look around and see what I can find. It also makes me wish I'd taken a pic.
