Tibicen lyricen cicada - Tibicen lyricen - female

Tibicen lyricen cicada - Tibicen lyricen - Female
Lowell/St Patrick Cemetery, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
July 28, 2004
The molt process is completed when the T. lyricen's wings fold in "roof-like" against its body. This is why Cicadas are in the sub-order Homoptera. It will take several more hours for this specimen to darken into a fully hardened adult. At this stage is when the Cicada is commonly referred to as a "Teneral" it's rather soft like the consistancy of a newly molted soft-shelled crab. That is also why they are "Arthropods".
