Brown recluse? - Loxosceles reclusa

Brown recluse? - Loxosceles reclusa
Clinton County, Illinois, USA
July 19, 2008
Size: approx. 1cm
Found in my kitchen at night; the poor guy was rescued stunned but alive from a cat that thinks bugs are toys. I'm practically positive it's a male brown recluse.

Yes
I'm pretty sure this is something in the recluse spiders. The six eyes is a pretty good indication. I'm not positive it's the recluse. See this page for the list of choices and a range map.

The Brown Recluse is the only
The Brown Recluse is the only one I'm aware of for this geographic location, so I'd say Loxosceles reclusa is likely.

I think
this might be L. rufescens, Mediterranean recluse.

Lynette, Jebus, please take a look at Gertsch and Ennik and let me know what you think.

Loxosceles rufescens description on page 93; figure 348 on page 91; map 13 on page 90. (recorded in Fayette co., which shares a border with Clinton co.)

Loxosceles reclusa description on page 25; figure 10 on page 20; map 2 on page 6.

And, for Jebus, here's M and P's original file. You'll need to see it at full size to interpret the detailed shape of the violin marking. At 560px it is difficult to make out the carapace elevation changes, and how those changes distort the marking.
