Seaweed Fly - Fucellia - male

Seaweed Fly - Fucellia - Male
Tolmie State Park, Olympia, Thurston County, Washington, USA
July 30, 2008
Found on rocks at shore of Puget Sound. Strange little critter: would do this "dance" where it would hold one wing out for a second, walk around, flip the other wing out for a second, walk around, etc. Wasn't the exact same kind of dance the opomyzids do, but it sort of reminded me of them with the whole "display" thing.

Fucellia, male (WA)
Another interesting fly that occurs (almost) only on sea shores (we also have them along the Great Lakes here). Unlike most other anthomyiids the male is dichoptic like females (eyes broadly separated above) not holoptic (eyes touching above).
