Stiletto fly - Cyclotelus rufiventris

Baiting Hollow, Suffolk County, New York, USA

Size: est. 1 inch

Found on wild rose at the edge of the 100 ft. bluff overlooking Long Island Sound, which is a sandy area surrounded mainly by white and red oak, wild cherry and hickory. There is also a salt water marsh fed by a fresh water stream nearby.

Cyclotelus rufiventris

This stiletto fly is Cyclotelus rufiventris (Loew) (Therevidae).

Thank you Lynette. I was not able to find a match on the stiletto page. The form looks similar, but I don't see one with an unstriped and mahogany abdomen.
