This aggregation often had 5 or 6 individuals involved. I couldn't see any prey in the tangle. Mating behavior?

Mating behavior, yes...
involving a desperately outnumbered female. Such savage "gang bangs" sometimes occur in many solitary wasps.

Thanks! Knew I needed to get a shot of this behavior, without getting too close. They are quite common at this site, and fairly intimidating. I guess they look worse than they really are.
