Reminds me of Chramesus
But the quoted dimensions seem a bit large.

Good fit for Chramesus sp.
See: Forestry images for Chramesus spp

The specimen in the third SEM photo measures ~2.4mm with the head down, so my measurement may not be out of line. Unless there's a similar genus, I think Chramesus is a fit. BTW, I notice that several specimens are not ID'ed to species. Thanks, Mike

Follow up note...
Obviously there are other somewhat similar Hylesinini, but my image suggests an unsegmented antennal club. Also, there are no pines, cypresses, or conifers in the area. The surrounding habitat is dominated by oaks, willows, elms, hackberries and some ashes. So the area hosts and morphology still suggests Chramesus.

Chramesus subopacus or Ch. Chapuisii
Chramesus subopacus and Ch. Chapuisii (both in Celtis spp.) are likely to occur in or near Austin. (Thomas H. Atkinson, pers. comm, Aug 2008)

a bark beetle -- and a very distinct, too
i believe it's a male, but my idea of NA fauna is a very vague one, so i must shut up right here...
