Ponderous borer - Trichocnemis spiculatus - female

Ponderous borer - Trichocnemis spiculatus - Female
Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado, USA
August 2, 2008
Size: 2"
Our horticulture curator at the zoo I work at found this beetle today. It died after he caught it and before I got it from him. My initial thought was Prionus, but the thorax doesn't look right. It looks pretty much identical to Ergates spiculatus to me and we have plenty of ponderosa and douglas fir here. I'd love to add a Colorado data point if someone can positive ID it. I still have the beetle, so can take different shots if needed.

This is a female (note ovipositor) Ergates spiculatus. Neat find!

This is Ergates spiculatus neomexicanus. You can tell by the pale irregular blotches in the elytra. It found in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona.

Thanks, Eric!
I saw on whatsthatbug.com that you were having computer issues, so I was hoping you'd ID this one when you got back. I'll move it.
