Definitely flies
But I'm not sure which ones.

 
Ah ha! I was thinking syrphid. Now I'm looking syrphid...
Temnostoma alternans looks right, but i'm no expert.



Not many at Bug Guide, and yours is the first from Canada.

Thanks for your effort, Ron. I've spent a lot of time trying to identify this one. 1st one in Canada -- I live in Québec's Eastern Townships, about 30 miles north of Newport, Vermont.

 
Search tips: On this one, I looked at a lot of images.
With that scenario, you can go to Images of syrphids, then use the Browse feature.

Another approach is to seach on "wasp mimic" and, that failing, "bee mimic". You may want to keep this in mind, in case you run across another such beast.
