Tiny robber - Holcocephala
Harms Woods Forest Preserve, Glenview, Cook County, Illinois, USA

Size: ~6mm
Sitting way out on the tips of the floral branches of Solidago ulmifolia were these tiny little robber flies. Interestingly, these were slow flyers, in contrast to their larger cousins who zoom around. Is this Holcocephala ? It looks like the images in the guide, but we are confused by the ones that give sizes of 1cm+ or even 1.5 cm! We're probably stretching it to say these guys were 6mm!
