Large scarab beetle - Osmoderma eremicola

Large scarab beetle - Osmoderma eremicola
Atlantic Mine, Houghton County, Michigan, USA
August 3, 2008
Size: About 2 cm
I think this is a scarab beetle of some type. My 3-year-old daughter found it on the kitchen floor, of all places (that's her hand in the pictures). I'm thinking it looks like _Osmoderma_eremicola_, is that correct?

Yes
This is Osmoderma eremicola. Have you noticed the interesting scent these beetles have?

Thanks for the confirmation
Actually, no, I haven't noticed the scent. I read on the description that they were supposed to smell of "russian leather", but I tried sniffing it, and this one doesn't seem to have a discernable smell (aside from a very, very faint odor reminiscent of dead fish). Is it something they only secrete when they are annoyed, or do they always smell?

Not sure.
It might be a sex specific odor.
