Mydas clavatus - male

Mydas clavatus - Male
Roosevelt, Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA
July 13, 2008
Apparently nectaring. At first thought to be a wasp; hence, comments below.

Mydas
M. clavatus. Male.

well...
It does not really look like a Sphex to me. It seems that the abdomen does not taper where it attaches to the thorax. Almost seems more fly-like than wasp-like to me.

How big was it? Judging by the milkweed flowers, it seems at least an inch.

Thank you very much....
Thank you for your comment on the picture. I'll change the heading to open the fly possibility to browsing viewers.

I do think that I see a pink flower in a place suggesting that there must be a reduction of diameter of the abodomen before attachment to the thorax. ???

I agree that it was over an inch long. I think the Milkweed flowers provide the only clue to size. The photographer did not provide me with any information on size. Sorry.
