I agree. Thanks. I am relatively new at this, and am now realizing the Audubon Guide is not the "best reference."

Take a look at this link -- http://bugguide.net/node/view/19005#13461. This is mainly for the comment on Sandhills hornet. I made the same assumption using the Audubon guidebook. One of the experts will be able to identify the wasp. You might want to look through the wasp (Vespula) photos to see if you can find some that match yours, too. By the way -- very nice photos!
