This dark fellow was nibbling on every plant it came across in the brackish/fresh marsh area of coastal Louisiana, rejecting most of what it found.

Looks like the salt marsh caterpillar.
Arctiidae, Estigmene acrea. I've just been rearing up a whole bunch of these in New Orleans, they eat a wide range of plants and are found all over the place down here. This is a super fast caterpillar, too, and active during the day.
