Velvet Ant - Timulla - female

Velvet Ant - Timulla - Female
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
August 5, 2008
I think this ant/wasp? was missing a few legs but even with missing legs it didn't slow down. Really hard to take a photo since it was constantly on the move. I managed to get a few shots when it stopped to clean off its legs -- probably wiping off some of the spider webs that were set by the spiders in this sweep.

Found My Velvet Ant
When I saw your comment "constantly on the move," I knew I had found my velvet ant. Still, how did you get such an awesome shot with a Sony DSC-H5? I used a Sony DSC-H1 with 2 diopter and hard to follow with short depth-of-field.

Now I know what they are. I tried to stop it and that is when I noticed how hard they were and the awsome stinger. Glad it didn't sting me. No picture but I'm sure he is hunting in my back yard.

Camera
Your comment reminded me to update my user information. Since around mid-July I started taking photos with a DSLR - Panasonic Lumix DMC-L10K with an Olympus 52mm macro lens.
