large wasp

large wasp
american falls, power County, Idaho, USA
August 6, 2008
Size: slightly less than 1 inch
These wasps have been flying around all summer, but usually they do not land so Ive never been able to catch one. They just all the sudden will fly on by full speed and I'll only catch a glimpse. I got lucky today and cought one though.

Moved
Moved from Bembicinae.

Bembix amoena.
This is a well-educated guess:-) I collected that species in Oregon and specimens 'usually' had reduced markings like this. Neat find! Oh, it is one of the sand wasps.
