Seattle Katydid - Meconema thalassinum - male

Seattle Katydid - Meconema thalassinum - Male
UW campus, King County, Washington, USA
August 7, 2008
Size: 15 mm
I don't see many Orthopterans in the Seattle area, so I was happy to catch this katydid. Does anyone know what species this is? I still have the specimen in a cup, so I can take additional pictures if needed. What looks like an ovipositor in this picture is actually a pair of cerci. I didn't realize this at the time I took the photo, unfortunately. I'd have changed the viewing angle slightly to show the two curved cerci that almost touch each other at their tips.

another katydid sighting!
Hey! Do drumming katydids just like UW or did you let that fellow go? 'Cause I live across the street from the campus and that exact insect was on my ceiling before I trapped him in a cup and sent him on his way. I hadn't seen one of those since leaving the east coast- should we thank global warming for this little visit?

Meconema thalassinum
This is a drumming katydid, a European species established in the northeast US and Vancouver BC. Yours is the second record I've heard of for Washington. Maybe you could submit the evidence to the Burke Museum at UW or some other place of permanent record.

Thanks,
That's interesting to know; unbelievable how many invasive species there are here...
I'll let the entomology folks at UW know about it.

More sightings
In the last few days, I've spotted nearly a dozen of these in and around my yard, slightly larger at nearly 20mm.
I'm about 2.5 miles north of the UW (in Wedgwood).
