Mystery Antlion - Glenurus luniger

Mystery Antlion - Glenurus luniger
Montosa Canyon, Santa Rita Mts., Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA
August 5, 2008
Size: ~50
Looked through Bugguide's Antlion images, but found no match. Saw this individual flying twice and its front wings are unmarked. Only hind wings with patches of black and white. Can someone ID?

#211536 Identification – Glenurus luniger
Identification. Nice shot of an uncommon species. Known from USA only in far southern AZ. Hate to contradict eye-witness accounts, but both the forewing and hind wing have dark markings in this species, as is evident from the image. A species new for BugGuide.

Thanks John -
I could easily have been mistaken about the forewings being marked. Not that easy to distinguish when the critter is flying. Thanks again for the ID, maybe an editor will make a species page for it.

Glenurus gratus
This looks exactly like Glenurus gratus, at least the image in my Kaufman Field Guide to Insects of North America. However, they list the range as Florida, north to Indiana and New Jersey. They note that there are two other species north of Mexico, though. Someone with a more comprehensive library might be able to help pin this down!

Hello Stephen:
I saw the images of G. gratus while looking thru bugguide antlion images, but that's why I mentioned that on my critter only the hindwings were patterned unlike G. gratus on which both wings are patterned. Maybe that makes no difference and it is G. gratus, but that would certainly surprise me. Thanks for the input.
