Leptogaster - female

Leptogaster - Female
Off Angeles Crest Highway, ~5000 ft. altitude, San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles County, California, USA
August 5, 2008
Using the key to Asilidae in Cole & Schlinger (1), I come up with Leptogaster . I'll try to get a specimen for better ID. If Leptogaster , perhaps it will turn out to be L. californica , whose type comes from Monrovia Canyon, San Gabriel Mountains - merely a guess based on location.

Leptogaster
Likely correct genus with six species in CA in that genus. You will need Martin 1957 Volume 111 from American Museum of Natural History wherein he introduced five of those species. L. californica is supposed to be a large reddish yellow species. This seems most likely to be arida but I cannot eliminate all of the others. L fornicata also close to this species.

Leptogaster,
probably female of californica - but could be arida also. Really need to look at male genitalia, etc. for certain ID.

Thanks for your informative comments, Eric -
They probably don't live much beyond a week? Any records on that?
Anyway, I still intend to look for a specimen this week.

Thanks, Herschel -
I'll try to find the paper by Martin; Jim Hogue probably has it as CSUN.
