History--The taxonomic history of the genus Cryptocephalus for North America began in 1787 when Johan Christian Fabricius (1745-1808), a Danish entomologist, described two species:

Cryptocephalus notatus Fabricius 1787
Cryptocephalus venustus Fabricius 1787
,

in 1798, he described another species that was subsequently renamed because it was a homonym:

[Metachroma atratum Fabricius 1798 (Cryptocephalus) Homo.]

In 1801, Fabricius added one more species:

Cryptocephalus nanus Fabricius 1801

In 1808, Guillaume Antoine Olivier (1756-1814), a French Entomologist, described three species, all presently valid:

Cryptocephalus guttulatus Olivier 1808
Cryptocephalus incertus Olivier 1808
Cryptocephalus trivittatus Olivier 1808
