Great Golden Digger Wasp - Sphex ichneumoneus and Weevil Wasp - Cerceris clypeata - Female
Central Park, New York, USA
August 7, 2008

Been seeing
a lot of these little wasps here in my area also. Kaufman field guide shows two similar listed as; Philanthus or Cerceris. Not sure how to determine which it would be.

Cerceris
Thanks, Jon.

Placement
So, where should this nice picture go? It is your choice: Cerceris or golden digger.

Placement
Perhaps we can put it in both. Thanks, Ellen

Cerceris male
note body shape and inner eye margin straight, not angled as in Philanthus

Cerceris male
Thanks, John.

Cerceris clypeata, female (NY)
Actually a female, note clypeal process.

Cerceris clypeata (female)
Thanks, Matthias.
