On the way to the BugGuide Gathering in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, 3 of us stopped at Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge in Knox County, TN. Here is one of the creatures we found there.

It reminds me of an Argiope.

I hadn't considered looking at Argiope...but then, I'm extremely new to spider identification.
The shape and pattern on the abdomen do seem to fit well with some of the images for Argiope trifasciata (Not suggesting it is that species, just that it seems to fit the structure of it)
