This huge grasshopper flew by me....initially thought it was a noisy bird !

Schistocerca americana
Looks like an American Bird Grasshopper (Schistocerca americana). It isn't surprising you thought it was a bird at first - the bird grasshoppers are noted for their powers of flight, and at their sizes, many people have made the same mistake.
