Silver-spotted Fern Moth - Callopistria cordata

Silver-spotted Fern Moth - Callopistria cordata
Acadia NP, Hancock County, Maine, USA
August 9, 2008

Tom, what do you think of this one

We don't see the black dots on the thorax...

Tough call
If I had to choose I'd go with Callopistria mollissima, but I'm far from sure.

And it looks like Carol was right on with her ID too
What do you think, Tom?

Same dorsal pattern, and we think we can just make out the lines on the face. Carol, do you have more images?
Looks like you're having fun with your new book, Tom!

I think you're right
A good look at the head would clinch it. Either with another picture or maybe just a larger version of this one.
The book is great with 5"X7" pictures!

Moved
Moved from Callopistria.
Matches well with the picture in Wagner's Owlet book, page 375. The black dots on the pronotum don't show up on Pink-shaded Fern Moth.

It's one of these 2 moths. I might even lean towards C. cordata, because I don't see the zigzag lines over the spiracles, and the Silver-spotted has been the more common adult of the 2 for me.

This has the face and shape of
Callopistria mollissima, Wagner pg 428, who says it can also be emerald green, but we don't really know how variable the pattern on these can be :(
He also mentions C. cordata, among others. Have you seen any of the fern moth species adults around?

Callopistria cordata
Callopistria cordata showed up on our porch in Moth form earlier this year, I think. Today (Aug 21) we found a caterpillar nearby that looks a lot like the one on Wagner p. 428. I am wondering if it might be the caterpillar of a fern Moth. i posted it asking for help with ID. I'll try to post the Moth photo with it.
