Yellow fly at bird seed - Ptecticus trivittatus

Yellow fly at bird seed - Ptecticus trivittatus
Guelph, Ontario, Canada
August 12, 2008
Size: ~1.5 cm
These flies appear to be attracted to spilled seed beneath our bird feeder (the bird feeder is suspended from a chestnut tree, next to an apple tree, and bordered by a cedar hedge; there is also a compost bin nearby). There are several flies at the spilled seed and they approach each other aggressively (possibly defending territories?).
