Size: 7-8mm
This fly was caught in a milkweed flower and was not strong enough to free itself.

Milkweed
Milkweed flowers can be death traps. I have seen several insects caught or just an abandoned leg without a body; but never got such nice shots.

 
After taking the shots
I destroyed the blossom and freed the fly which took off.

Odontomyia or Hedriodiscus
can't be sure of genus because wing venation is not visible

Agree on family.
I don't know the taxonomy of soldier flies very well, so will move this to family level for now. Simply outstanding images! Thank you for sharing your work here.
