Size: Approx. 5/8"
I didn't have my camera set properly for the true colors; but this insect was definitely blue & with metallic gold. I've never seen anything like it. What is it? Do you know?

Moved
Moved from Sesioidea.

It is a clearwing moth
in the family Sesiidae. We'll move it there where Dr Taft can see and maybe ID it.

moth id
It's most likely a female dogwood borer (Synanthedon scitula) based upon the key characteristics that I can see along with the location and time of year.

I added a new image. . .
maybe this will help with positive ID? Thank you so much for commenting.
