Enchenopa

Enchenopa "porrecta" - Enchenopa on-cercis-canadensis
Univ. Tennessee Division of Biology Field Station, Sevier County, Tennessee, USA
August 8, 2008
Size: 6 mm (incl. horn)
This, and a couple of others, were found on redbud, Cercis canadensis. I measured another individual--it was about 6 mm including the "horn", and about 4 mm along the body. Andy Hamilton comments here, in a discussion about the related Enchenopa binotata--thumbnail below:

"This species (Enchenopa binotata) feeds on bittersweet (Celastrus spp.); its horn is longer than that of E. brevis and more erect than that of E. porrecta, which feeds on redbud (Cercis canadensis)."

Based on that statement, I'm identifying the ones we saw as E. porrecta, but see comment on nomenclature below.

I was thrilled to see this ho
I was thrilled to see this hopper at the Gathering, and when I got home, I looked at a Redbud (Cercis canadensis) in my yard. There was a hopper like this one! Unfortunatuly, it got away before I could get a photo, and I haven't been able to find another one.

Enchenopa
Sorry, names are not yet available for most of the species. The name "porrecta" is based on a drawing, and is probably a junior synonym of E. binotata. A MS on these problems is still "in the works".
