I used to work Nights at the SBC Communications NOC in San Diego, CA.. On my Lunch I would go out and take Pictures and found a Large quantity of Black Widows both Male and Female. This one is a Female of course.

Nice !
I believe Widows have a propensity to bite when eggs are laid. Otherwise, they are no more prone to biting than other cobweb weavers. They rarely leave the web.
